She speaks as to the thought that while the construct of both are problematic, they should not be disregarded, but rather carefully participated in.

Gender appears to be a kind of difference engine — continually looking at bodies and trying to maximize differences between them, and in some cases inventing them. Why? Because most people find it highly attractive — think of the French saying, “Vive La Difference!”
If you don’t want to take part, if you stand aside, choose parts from both, or just find the whole exercise boring – or as Judith Butler said, ‘comical’ – you are highly stigmatized. Unfortunately, this stigma is still very socially acceptable. Read the rest of this entry »
