Landscape Of Conciousness

Below, you will find a recent discussion between myself and Carey Jean Sojka. Carey’s blog, “Landscape Of Conciousness” has a great piece in which she compares the institution of marriage with the construct of masculinity. She speaks as to the thought that while the construct of both are problematic, they should not be disregarded, but rather carefully participated in.

A Note From Riki Wilchins

Gender appears to be a kind of difference engine — continually looking at bodies and trying to maximize differences between them, and in some cases inventing them. Why? Because most people find it highly attractive — think of the French saying, “Vive La Difference!”

If you don’t want to take part, if you stand aside, choose parts from both, or just find the whole exercise boring – or as Judith Butler said, ‘comical’ – you are highly stigmatized. Unfortunately, this stigma is still very socially acceptable. Read the rest of this entry »
